Hi, I'm Teresa with Channel 7 Near Northside Neighborhood News. Today we have Miss Barbie Roberts, 2010 Queen of the Wisconsin State Fair, Miss Maja Kowalski 2025 Miss Polonia, Chicago, and myself as Miss Puerto Rico Aurora 2015 from right here in Chicagoland. We are going to chat a bit with the newly crowned Miss Polonia about beauty pageants here in Chicago.
Barbie: Thanks so much, Teresa and Maja for coming to my home.
Maja: Thank you Barbie for having me. I'm so happy to be able to share my heritage with you and Teresa today.
Barbie: Please tell us about yourself besides being Miss Polonia.
Maja: I'm currently enrolled at Roosevelt University as a Senior and hope to be graduating in Business Finance in 2026. I love living in Chicago and enjoying all the activities along Lake Michigan. I bike along the lake and enjoy swimming and volleyball at North Beach.
Maja: I'm also currently working a summer internship in a bank providing financial services to my neighborhood and the Polish community.
Teresa: Do you find yourself doing financial assistance or more as an interpreter.
Maja: Definitely both. My parents came from Poland in the 1990's, and Polish was my only language until I started school here in Chicago.
Teresa: That sounds like you have a very busy summer. What local events will you be participating in this year as Miss Polonia.
Maja: Of course the largest event is coming up over Labor Day, the huge Taste of Polonia festival Just west of here on Lawrence and west of I-90. It is the largest Polish event of culture, food and fun here in Chicago. And, like all of the Chicago festivals, everyone is welcome.
Inside the girls have coffee, a Chicago cake and fruit bars while they continue their conversation.
Teresa: Well ladies, what do you think was your best Pageant experiences and of course the worst?
(Lots of laughter)
While Teresa takes notes for her article, Foofie has an interest and tries to find a few crumbs.
Maja: Miss Barbie, how has your career been changed by you regal experiences?
Barbie: (Laughing) My regal experiences were basically eating too many Wisconsin Creme Puffs for photos and too many deep fried cheese curds. I gained 6 pounds during the State Fair, because everyone wanted me sampling and being photo'd eating their specialties.
And of course all the Sponserships. But, I left that behind for University here in Chicago and I only go back to visit with family. Here, I don't think anyone knows I was once a 'Queen' of anything.
Oh, yes, the food...if I have to eat another dripping Polish Sausage sandwich on camera... ugh! But, I confess I fake eating some things for photos.
Barbie: No wonder you have such a small waist.
Teresa laughing: I think I had to test over 20 Empanadillas for a contest. I don't think I have eaten one since. After that many, they all tasted the same, and I simply closed my eyes and picked the winner.
Wrapping up, thank-you Ladies, for the insights into Local pageantry and congratulations to Miss Polonia Chicago.
Now I'll write a great plug for the Festival and it's only a couple of weeks away. We'll see you then, Maja, I'll bring a crew live, and we will tour the festival. How does that sound.
Maja: That will be wonderful, as long as I don't have to eat another Polish Sausage sandwich on camera...LOL.
