Taking Doll photos: Color to Black and White

Ad-Free Blog
Hi Doll Lovers!

Sorry I have been gone so long---I will still be not in the doll room for a bit. Stairs are still hard for me. But, we are working in therapy on the knee, at least I am driving now.

I did manage to bring up some bins of dolls and a few things to work on---you know though, you always forget something, like shoes---rubberbands, the doll brushes, and a few props, jewelry.

Luckily I had a bin of doll miscellaneous from a thrift store in the car trunk, I had forgotten.
When I needed a chair for this portrait pose, I had one, in that bin.

For all my photos, I use an old EZ-Share Kodak Z740 on Auto set--
with no flash on a 2 count delay--
which gives the camera time to really focus well. It's an easy camera to use for the closeups for the dolls and for my Etsy store.

Zoe is one of my favorites to take a photo of, she has such a pretty face. She's only partially articulated on a new body. Her skin color is just a bit off for the new articulated bodies. At least now she doesn't have big flat feet,
and she can bend her knees.
The dress was ordered online at Amazon from China. It has 6 layers of tulle, fits perfectly. I separated all the tulle to give the sumptuous effect.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here's a closeup view. Lucky you can't see her feet, she does have white stockings on, but no shoes.
Here you can see the netting very clearly. These were taken on the kitchen table with natural light, and an overhead kitchen light in a globe.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

In editing this to Black and White,  I did a light vignette haze around the edges, kicked up the contrast a bit...and the shot looks entirely different.  Stray hairs really show up in black and white, so get out that gel or water to keep them neat.
I think she looks quite real, here.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here's another shot of the same doll. This was supposed to be a night scene. Taken in the doll room, with Christmas lights on in the dollhouse and a can light with a photo bulb in it from the side.
In color, this shot color isn't as interesting as the black and white. Dark shadow, Dark coat, medium tone fur,
and her light hair make for lots of contrast and interest.
Stray hairs really showed up on this one--
in color you don't even see them.
In editing I did very little but up the contrast a tiny bit.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Emily and Vera...The dog looks perfect, the Christmas lights provide the LIGHT, and the snow becomes a medium tone, the greens and fur provide the dark. Emily's black hair and the dark color on the dog, add balance to the composition. The connection between the dog and Emily with the leash--ties the composition together. This photo was cropped to give mold and a tight composition.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Black and white can give a vintage vibe to any scene. I did no editing with this one. This was taken in the craft room with LED overhead lighting. Sindy has a hotdog stand, this could be this summer or 50 years ago...with the black and white. I did cut this down from a larger photo---there was too much stuff the same tone in the foreground. Here the apron provides the bright white.
Ken's shirt provides the dark, the stripes provide interest.
Everything else is secondary as the action between the two is the
focus. The diagonal of her arm and the cutting board provide energy to the composition.

barbieoldnewgreenredo
Ryan and Richelle at a formal affair. Here I used a can light to the side with a photo bulb in it. It's a great photo in color, but all the detail of the lace really jumps out in black and white. All the white in the background has great textures and the stripes in the column echo the placket in Ryan's shirt and the stripes and lace in Richelle's dress. Having triangular elements in a photo--really tighten the composition.

I don't recall adding much editing to this, besides zooming in for a closeup.

Hope this post gives you a few ideas for staging some photos for black and white. Most photo editing programs give you the option of going to gray scale or black and white in editing. You may have to up exposure, or up or down contrast to get the effect you want.
Vignette framing, can block out distracting bits in a photo. It's very effective though, don't you think.

I hope to be posting a few times a week now--with something!

Hugs to You All and your dolls, too.

Thank you for visiting, I will try and respond to every question and comment.

More Lemonade

AD-Free Blog.

...Or the best laid plans of mice and a woman...?
source http://hilaryclarcq.com.
It's been nine days since I wrecked my knee, to be exact--tore my medial collateral ligament on my 'good' knee. We are hopeful it will heal, in a month or so. The other knee has already had two knee replacements.

Hence, I have all the gear for being laid up.  See the huge lump on the knee, there, --yep that's still swelling after 8 days.

Some things have changed since my 2010 knee replacements---like available drugs. And, let me mention that TYLENOL does squat, for an inflamed knee, swelling, and sharp(shudder) pain. Since I'm a senior citizen...other medications are no longer acceptable. I have to love my Doc, though, and he has prescribed a muscle relaxer which helps with all the cramping and I have had two decent nights of sleep, finally.

This is my window view---out there is all the Spring yard work, and planting that needs to be done. Poor hubby will really have a work out. I had managed to clean out the front flower bed, plant some perrenials that needed to be split. But, golly---4-6 weeks is a long time in the Spring of the year, to be laid up.

This what my bedroom view looks like---I can't really even get over there...the walker won't fit. Who knew how precious where your underwear drawer should be? The computer is set for an automatic duty---so I just cross my fingers it's working.
The pic on the tv...cracks me up--looks like a mashed up knee.

I've been putting my blogging laptop here, so I can get to it, and then slide it back down safely without having to strain.

Sigh---oh, yea---my blogging. For those viewing my doll blog---barbieoldnewgreenredo, it will be down for at least a few weeks, unless I recycle photos, etc. All my doll and craft supplies/equipment are down in the basement craft room.

My blog-oldnewgreenredo---I might be able to recycle a few photos and post, but, I won't be taking any new photos. (Hubby will do some--he just finished the greenhouse), but none of my Spring projects will be completed. After our awful long winter, we finally have a chance for some nice weather and hopefully I will make it to the porch when it's nice.

I've put my Etsy shop, BarberryLane on Vacation---until I'm able to go to the basement and do the shipping again.

Well, making tons of lemonade here---and I'll post when I have something useful to share! I am enjoying viewing all the wonderful posts of my fellow bloggers.

6/24 Update finally have a date with a Surgeon, we shall see!

Trish's Security Fence and Tutorial.

AD-Free Blog

Last episode: At "The Blue Sprinkling Can"---Trish waited for the fence guys to show up, so she could go home.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Meanwhile her brother arrived with more supplies: dirt, pea gravel, lawn food, organic plant food, and worm compost.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

She is still waiting on all the bottled and tin goods in the small sizes. Here you get to see the fence set up.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Foldable, the fence really tucks away during the time the garden center is open.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: This fence is much easier to close than I thought it would be. Just a quick lock-up and we are all secure.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Tomorrow is opening day--and we are almost ready. Is anyone ever ready for anything?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This looks great, the only thing outside the fence is that huge cacti planter which weighs a ton.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Time to go home!

Thanks for looking at our New Fence which is a DIY.

Quick Fence Tutorial
What you need:
3/8" craft wood  (remember you need posts on each end and double by your door.
green paint. I used 10" long so I needed 3-36" posts to make my fence posts.

paint---acrylic-- for painting posts whatever color you want.

Plastic coated Hardware cloth, cut into the size sections you need to achieve the total length of your space. This comes in Black coated, silver (uncoated) and Green coated.

Plastic coated wire, 18guage which is pretty stiff. (mine is True Value and is faint blue color, but looks gray in photos-I also make clothes hangers from this.)

Tools needed:

Needlenose pliers

Drill manual or I used my dremel

Drill bit a little larger than your wire

Pencil and measuring tape/ruler
paint brush

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I needed 28" of completed fence with a door in the middle, so I cut 8 posts and 7 pieces of wire panel.

My panels are 9 spaces by 20 spaces. Roughly 5" x 10". (the wire connecting loops will also provide length. If you make a taller fence you made to have 4 sets of connectors on each post.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Tools are pretty basic. Yes, you do have to cut each wire separately.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I drilled the holes in the center of the post and all the way through.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I marked and drilled 3 holes: the middle and on each end for connecting the posts to the panels.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here I used a generous measure of wire about 2 1/2" and inserted in the holes and then wrapped in the first square and turned tight.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here you can see the second loop is cut shorter and then turned in.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Hook your panels together in the three places. Finish off your ends with the extra posts. To use open and close, just fold them accordion style. I'm loosely attaching them to the walls of the building and the greenhouse. I may make a few more panels for other projects. They are sort of screaming for vines, lol.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Now Trish can go home and all her creations are safe and sound!

Trish's "Blue Sprinkling Can" Garden Center.

Something New in the HFIM Neighborhood---the

Blue Sprinkling Can Garden Center

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish has been hard at work setting up the "Blue Sprinkling Can" garden center,  just next to
Vickie's Vintage in the HFIM neighborhood.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: I'm almost ready for the opening on Monday. Just a few more pots to fill, and signage, and labels, and price tags! Yikes, there is still so much to do and it's getting to be dusk, and where are the fence guys?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: I hope everyone likes my garden designs. We sure have lots made up.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The greenhouse yard is filled with fresh flowers, plant sets, potted plants, and planters. Lots of shells, cactus planters, and garden ornamentation too.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Welcome to "The Blue Sprinkling Can"! We aren't quite open yet. I'm Trish, can I help you with anything. We still have some plants, lots of tags, and signage not out yet. ?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: Oh, wonderful to meet with you---so numerous lovely plants. I must look for my office.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Well, we will be doing custom designs for your specific needs. I'm a third generation greenhouse kid and a Master Gardener. We have lots of vintage and new pots and planters to choose from.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: You have those little garden gnomes---how small and color filled.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan:  I see in the green house, may I enter?

Trish: Sure, look around, while I water the plant flats.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: Lara come all the beautiful small gardens in this glass house. My father grows bonsai at home.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Ms. Roberts how nice to see you, again. We will be ready to open on Monday!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lara Roberts: I'm so glad you leased this space. You have a wonderful selection and you placed so much in so little space, I'm impressed.

Trish: Well, I can bring fresh product in from our place in Lake Zurich each day. Hopefully the fence installers will be here soon. They promised to put up the fencing today.

Lara: We still have some daylight. This will be a fine addition to the neighborhood. So many people live here and take public transportation or walk and don't have access to outdoor plants.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: Lara, look at this for Dr. Myrr's birthday. It's very fine planter.

Trish: Let me help you, which on are you interested in?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: This one in a book stack!

Trish: Oh, yes, we hollow out old books and place a planter inside. Our special design. We can even do them with your specific types of books.

Mulan: Dr. Myrr is  Department Head of 19th Century Art History at the Art Institute. Those books will compliment in his office.

Mulan: Dr.Myrr will love this. I will need for the end next week.
Trish: Great, I can save it for you and still show it at our opening.
barbieoldnewgreenredo

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Thank you both for stopping by Ms. Roberts and Ms. Kyori. I will save the planter for you--and see you next week!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: I'll put the rocks here, now where are those fencing guys? I'm bushed...(chuckle).

As always---to be continued....
I used Old, New, Green, and Redo in this post.
A list of materials and tutorial will be in the next DIY Doll Greenhouse and Garden post in the future.
