Apologies to Hans Christian Andersen for this adaption of his Prince and the Pea. This story was written for my five-year old granddaughter for Valentine's Day, 2018. And, she is reading it!

...but, Maid Aggie told this story of a kingdom, long, ago….
Once upon a time…Prince Henrik did not have a Princess to sit with him on the throne, so he could not become KING. He was very sad and lonely.

“I have seen too many Princesses. None were
smart, or fun, or anything special at all. I do not want to live with any of
them."
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
"I will just stay a Prince and be alone."
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
"Dear Aunt Marta, please tell me we have seen every last Princess in the kingdom?”
“Have no fear, Prince Henrik. I will help rule our kingdom. I will help you in every way. Have I not managed your castle well, these many months since your Father’s passing?”

Prince Henrik sighed, "Yes, Marta, you have been a great help. I hoped to find someone to share my life with. My mother the Queen was so good to the people. They miss her, and my father, too."
Marta smiled and bowed her head. "Dear Prince, I will help you anyway I can. I always do my best to serve you. I will give you some
berry juice, do you want cake, an apple? Perhaps a game of cards later, to
cheer you up?” asked Marta.

Maid Aggie bowed and said to Prince Henrik, "Your Majesty, a young girl has come a long way and has asked to see the Prince."

Tante Marta mumbled under her breath, "Oh, no. Not another one of these...imposters."
Maid Aggie said, "I think this one is special Sire. She has come a very long way in the snow and cold.

“Your Majesty, I am Kirstine. On my twenty-first
birthday, I was given my father’s papers.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
The papers said
to bring this book to the King or the Prince of our Kingdom. I ask you to
please look at them.”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
The Prince
sighed. “Why do they
always have papers, but what do we have here, a tiara. Hmmmmm. He thought, this tiara looks like my grandmother’s.
Kirstine said, “The crown was in my
father’s family, the papers say so. Does this make me a Princess, Sire?”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Prince Henrik replied, "I will examine these and you must stay in the castle after your long journey."
Kirstine bowed,
“Thank you for your kindness, your Majesty.”
Aunt Marta led the way up the many stairs, while the Prince pondered
the papers and the small tiara.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Kirstine asked, “How many more steps.” Marta said,
“Just a few more.”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Aunt Marta leaned over and whispered, "Maid Aggie, you know what to do with the pea."
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
“Kirstine, this was my
room, we have filled it with dresses fit for a new Princess. But for now, you
are tired and you need sleep.”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Kirstine was amazed at the beauty of the room. “What a beautiful feather bed, and it
looks so soft.”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Marta sighed. “Aggie, please will
you ready the bed for our newest Princess, while I help her with her night
gown.”
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
“Yes, Ma’am I know just what to do.”
Maid Aggie
placed a glittering metal PEA, under the feather mattress in the bed.
“There we are Ma'am. I’m adjusting the mattress and we
are ready for Miss Kirstine to have a fine sleep.”
Marta helped the 'princess' with her nightgown.

Kirstine climbed into bed and said, “Thank you, I’m so
tired, I should sleep well.”
(Under her breath, Aunt Marta,
whispered, “I’m sure you will, my dear.”)
