DIY Baking from Scratch!

Ad-Free Blog

I've always marveled at the food sites for dolls and the miniature food. Clearly the Far Eastern countries have everything down pat, though many sites waffle between doll house scale 1:12 and Barbie scale 1:6. Mini bakery is fine, but sometimes your dolls want a good-sized cookie or a big cake.

Rement miniatures are gorgeous but horridly expensive...and that's not the way I play, I either thrift store find someones 'throw-aways' or I DIY it myself.

Anyways, I've been making cakes and bakery for Sindy's Patisserie. These are some new just-baked pieces. I used foil instead of parchment paper, and some got a bit scorched on the bottom...? Just like real baking. Others are nice and toasty.

The latest was made from various brands of polymer clay and colors sometimes change with baking. I baked these according to directions and then decorated, painted or glazed. I have used some inexpensive molds I have picked up over the years, and done some free hand.

These brioche were made by pushing clay balls into a Barbie muffin pan with ridges. You can see the scorch marks on these from the foil--which I won't use again.

These are the unpainted cookies, Milk chocolate Chunk...NUM!

Butter flower cookies from a press mold, same with the fudgey hearts, with a glaze on them.

Here you can see the difference a glaze makes.

Cinnamon Pinwheels and Chocolate glazed ones.

Pineapple Coconut Butter Cakes. First try with a different product, I will experiment some more with these paints.

Sun cakes for Cinco De Mayo,

Lemon Butter cakes

And we glazed glazed Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Might give these another coating.

Rose shaped fruit filled coffee cakes. I'm hoping to try pies next.

Kringle the oval shape up on the shelf behind them and being dished up by Sindy, are (Danish Pastry filled with nuts or fruit) and have been very popular with the dolls. Also have those in bar shapes, like a half Kringle.

Sindy shows the new Fudgey Bundt Cakes

I ventured to try some bigger shaped cakes. I used all sorts of plastic lids as bases.

Cakes shapes can be made of wood, clay, plaster, plastic lids, foam, anything that will take paint. The lower right cake, will be a NorthWestern Wildcats cake, somehow! The NW got lost...lol, looks more like MTV...

A hat cake, next time I will build up the bow with multiple layers of paint, and figure out some way to make even polka dots.

I'm not ready to share tutorials yet, because I'm still experimenting with products. I will definitely share when I have that worked out. It's hard when you can't browse shop---I did order extra white products for curbside pickup, so I can calm some of these colors down.

This chocolate cake is so dark brown it's black, I added some sparkle paint, but that didn't liven it up---it is waiting for something extra. The little pink cherry cake worked well. The little Cherries are nail embellishments.

This gold sparkly paint was globby and came out globby, but a few roses attached should make it work...like I said, still experimenting. I used to teach LOTs of craft classes, and these mediums might warrant a video (which personally annoy me, but showing is better than trying to write everything down).
.

I just imagine the peach floral cake to be nummy apricot or peach jam inside. The orange cake is kinda bright, and has some sort of fruit slices on it.

I'm anxious to try clay draped to look like fondant, once I find oven safe cake shapes.

The Under the Sea cake has many colors layered, lots of depth here in color.
Cubby cake was my very first cake.

Wisteria or Lilac cake with chocolate twigs...I think this one looks nummy!

Sindy wanted a Quincenera cake with poppies,
I think she channeled Frida on this one.
Little strawberry whip cream cake on the right.

Yellow cake was pretty simple...little bits of trim and flowers.
Another black chocolate cake...!
I hope this inspires you to try and do some

  1. Looks like you had fun making pastries! I have a couple of those pineapple molds, that's good use of them. As soon as I started DIY Barbie Walmart stopped carrying the little bricks of clay, I was bummed. As you say, if we can ever get out again, it's one more thing on the list. I like your Sindy pics and wish I had a couple of those cookies with the cherry for my morning coffee:@)

    1. Thanks so much, Lynn. I know they really start to look real. The best I've used is the large block of white Sculpey from Michaels, others carry it also. It seems to not be as hard, and in the long run is pretty inexpensive when bought with a coupon.

  2. Aw, Thank you, Linda. Yes, they are pretty busy. Their fictitious neighborhood is pretty residential and not too many places to buy food during the pandemic. City living is great unless you can't walk to your destination and have to take public transportation right now. I do my doll stories in Real Life Time...weather and disaster wise! So they are all pretty much inside and working from home.
