Can you believe Ken is 60!
Remember what he looked like?
Almost like the guy on the back of comic books who wanted to get beefed up for the beach. Very thin...serious, and he had a fuzzy head.

March 1961, I was 13. I remember when the first Kens came out---my friends all thought he was a bit strange. Next to the original Barbie he looked okay, but...LOL.
I don't have an original Ken...so many of the later Kens are much more interesting, and I really want articulated Kens/guys for my stories, not always an easy task.
Since I have acquired--I'm not going to say collect, as I am basically a rescuer, I've sure have found a bunch of Kens since 2015.

A few of my Mattel dolls celebrating the old man in the middle. I realized all my photos had face masks on from this year...so these guys are breaking the rules. Just pretend it's another time, another place!

This group is up in the mountains for a guy weekend.
A fishing trip means a Under Sea Cake! And of course a Happy Birthday Cubs cake...!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
My newest guy is the BMR 1959 on the right. He is the palest of all the dolls except for one of the BTS guy! And he has makeup on!

Back at the HFIM house the rest of my Mattel guys are celebrating in the backyard.
Again... pretend it is another time and place...no masks!

Ryan(right): How does it feel to be 60, Dad?
Dad (Todd): GREAT! Let's get this party started, kid! Put the burgers on!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Jack the Lamplighter, Skater guy, New KEN (articulated) and Shaggy Ken...all ready to party!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Just a few older shots of my Kens.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Ryan's Dad, Todd, is just a cool dude!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Last year, Henri met Emilie in the park, and we have never seen his face, LOL
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
He's quite a hunk, Professor Higgins ...so he is
'enri 'iggins...joke!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Lots of blond princes in the cast here. AA Tres is a Flavas Mattel doll...and articulated. I've tried to increase my AA dolls, it isn't easy to find AA articulated guys.
Next to him on the right is a My Scene doll...his big head just is out of place with the others.

One thing about putting them all together, is I realized I have three of the 'Stuart' lower right dolls...so maybe I can give Patrick (back row right) a new body. He will be featured as the owner of the new bar/music venue...coming up soon.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Alan is a repro...pretty cute, but so stiff!
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
This is a photo of all my guys in 2019. Since then, their numbers have increased.
Dr. Ken (lower right) moved out of the HFIM house, and Kevin his brother is now a mannikin in Vickie's Vintage, but replaced by the new articulated Ken (wheelchair).

Malibu Ken.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
These two guys are related, hair parted differently, and one is articulated.

barbieoldnewgreenredo |
One of the AA Stefan dolls---made up to look like James Baldwin.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Very handsome doll, he has had a hair trim.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
Allan is Midge's old boyfriend...story on going!
.
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
So all My Kens just want to wish...
barbieoldnewgreenredo |
all the Kens Happy 60th Birthday!!!

Heeeeheee...Thanks on J. Baldwin...it worked out pretty well. Yes, they actually look pretty good---I have passed up on so many stiff ones though and now even the rubber leg ones, hard to get clothes on. And, Alan is a looker, thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteHa, the side glance Shaggy cracks me up! This will sound goofy but, of all the dolls, those gold hair Malibu Ken's seem so plastic and fake looking??? Love your diverse group, and don't worry about the guy with the big head... I think I work with him:@)
ReplyDeleteI should have put him on the other side...he is pretty cute. Thanks for stopping by for the party, lol. Hugs, Sandi
DeleteWow, Sandi, you've got quite a nice collection of Kens! Ken does look pretty good for 60, but I agree that the younger ones look much cooler than the early ones. Ken always seemed to be a sort of misfit. He looked so uncomfortable. I guess it was hard trying to come up with a male doll that wouldn't be threatening to little girls back in the day. I'm glad they eventually created some with more allure. I have a few Kens including James Bond Ken. His face is quite handsome, but his body is a bit awkward. I wanted to rebody him, but the way they put the heads on back in 2002, his head doesn't work with a newer Ken or IT Homme body.
ReplyDeleteHi, April. I agree, I would like to rebody some Kens, and have broken two so far just trying to get the head off! Yes, the threatening thing...I think that's why Alan was made so cute and youngish...instead of the mannikin that Ken was. Basically just something to stand in the background. The James Bond Ken is very cool, hoping I stumble across one sometime! PS, I even tried ordering china bodies and they don't work either??! Thanks for stopping by! Sandi
DeleteYou are lucky to have all these Ken dolls .... 🤩🤩🤩🤩
ReplyDeleteHi, Shasarignis...yes, I am lucky. MOST, 23 out of 28 are rescues from thrift stores. And, I only buy on sale, or special offers. Three I have won as door prizes, from doll groups. It's surprising what people give away to thrift stores. Hugs, thanks for visiting.

Dear Sandi,
ReplyDeletethis is the first time I visit this blog of yours, and I find it truly awesome, oh, how many remembrances of my late childhood... But tell me, really Ken is 60???
Let me say that time goes bye so fast, alas!
And how about your wonderful collection... you're truly a passionate collector, aren't you?!?
Thank you for showing your so lovely collecyion, Dearie,

Dany at ~ My little old world ~
Oh, Daniela, welcome to my fun place. Winters are very long in Chicagoland...and playing with the dolls and making bitty things is so relaxing. MOST of my dolls are thrift store finds and rescues. I do love doing the stories though and making a mini world. Thank you for stopping by. Sometime I will do some vignettes from the 1800's. I have acquired an old stove that will be perfect for an 1800's kitchen. Hugs, Sandi
DeleteI figured Ken was an Old Dude since I always recall him being around. My Brother Collected the GI Joes when they had the full sized ones. By the time my Daughter came along she inherited some of her Uncle's Old GI Joes and used to crack us up by setting them up in her Barbie Dollhouse doing mundane kitchen chores in full Combat Gear. The Man thought that to be hilarious, since he's Career Military... so seeing GI Joe in the Kitchen at the sink wearing Cammo, Assault Weapons and a Parachute was hysterical! I remember getting good prices for my Old Barbies from my Childhood and some of the Barbies from my Daughters Era... especially the New Kids On The Block Dolls, which were hugely popular when my Girls were growing up.
