Part 3: Trish's early outside of Vickie's on Sale Day!

Ad-Free Blog
Trish: Hi Barbie, welcome to the garden center so early in the morning. We just opened.

Barbie: Hi, Trish. I wanted you to meet my friend, Denise, from my modeling days. Now she is an editor and publisher and doing a book on gals like us, and it's titled, "Where are they Now!" I told her you were a track star in college and on the short list for the Olympics until your injury. And  here you are queen of all of this!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Wow, that's very cool..and my goodness my running days were fifteen years ago already.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Denise: Nice to meet you Trish---I love your garden center and your little shop is adorable.

Trish: Thanks, the shop is misleading, my workspace is huge behind this quaint facade. We are a full-service floral and garden center now.

Denise: How did you get started in flowers?

Trish: My family has a farm and garden center out in St. Charles. I'm third generation now into plants and garden.
But, I really love the city, so here I am.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie: Her garden center and Vickie's has revitalized this neighborhood. I'll have to take you to the GrandView which is an old hotel my aunt's company redid into condominiums and shops. We can have coffee and the most divine pastries there.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Feel free to browse, and Cam will help you with anything you might need. Denise it was so nice to meet you. I love the idea of your book, we never think we will end up where we are now... even with a family business.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: I have some orders to fill, but if you have any questions I'll be back in the workroom. Laters.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Denise: Visually, this space is stunning and  right here in the middle of an old neighborhood. I  think we may have to use this for women at work issue in the magazine.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Cam: I couldn't help but over hear you talking. An editor, wow. I'm a English major, specializing in writing. and I see you have a copy of ChicChic. I love their articles online.

Denise: Why, yes, I'm an editor as well as the publisher. And, hard copy magazines are having a tough time, but we keep at it. How long have you worked here, Cam?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Cam: I just started this Spring, it's a good flexible hours job for when I start back with classes in Fall. Let me know if I can help you with anything.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Billie: Hmmm, I wonder what's going on?  I have to get to painting class with these plants and set-up them up.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

(What else do I need?)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Billie: (I think I have everything?)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie: Billie is one of our local artists. She does fantastic paintings and teaches just down the street. Looks like you have something for still life?

Billie:Trish is super nice to let me return them after class! Excuse me, I gotta run!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Denise: Nice to meet you all. I had no idea this neighborhood had so much going on! I can't wait to see this Vickie's Vintage which looks like it's going to be busy.

(upstairs in Vickie's)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

EL: Well I have this gold cocktail dress, and this should fit you, Barbie. Was this what you had in mind?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie, I think so...oh my, look how crowded it is getting downstairs.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Denise: I think I have to have this dress, it's gorgeous and perfect for the Publisher's Conference key note. I have to introduce the featured speaker and she's always dressed smashing.

Barbie: The color will look magnificent with your hair.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Denise: Can you mark that sold, please. We have an editorial meeting we can't be late for and please add that sparkly one for Barbie for her next photo shoot. It will photograph super, and put all three dresses on my tab, Denise at ChicChic. I'll be using my corporate account! I'll text you the info as soon as we get to our meeting.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie: We better get going, before more shoppers show up! Good luck, EL!

Denise: And thank you, El. We will be back after our meetings.

EL: Great have a good day, and thanks for your business.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

EL: (Wow, we are really going to be slammed)

Burning the Midnight Oil at Trish's Flower Shop.

Ad-Free Blog

(Trish has been working very hard and burning the midnight oil to get ready for opening tomorrow, but first she filmed a post for her website.)

Come on in for a sneak peek. Of course we are getting ready for Valentine's Day---but we just had 8" of new snow, it like dusted for 4 days here in Chicago.

I've always loved doing the window first! We have a pink, red, and purple theme going on here.

Glass bottles or Demi-johns are still a great choice for minimalist decor, here just a few roses and some tulips with greens.

Of course there are lots of ROSES and HEARTS!

I did do a Faux rose wreath for outside, but it's so cold out now!

I try to have one statement piece in the shop---this is also done with faux flowers and some dried products.

My shop is small, but I have a huge backroom and an office to work with clients. Now that Covid is over there is LOTS of Wedding Work...and my dates are filling up fast for 2023.

This display wall has fresh flowers, plants, candles and accessories. Of course we have free cards for any purchase and my wild flower seeds.

The new iridescent vases just came in---as did the candles below. Scents from top shelf, Heartnotes(smells like candy hearts, and lower left to right are
Hot Heart(Spicy Cinnamon), Kisses in the Dark(Sandlwood and Patchouli), and ForgetMeNot (mixed floral), all perfect for the month of February!

I keep a kettle of fresh flowers here, and that is a very pink metal pot.

The cooler is full of flowers for the theme and ready made fresh arrangements. We will be doing lots of custom work for Valentine's Day, but also for other customers.

My faux tulips and roses make a great statement for the season!

I also have two coolers in the back room, full of finished arrangements and lots of materials and flowers for orders. I have a new gal who has been madly working for me, she's great. So, tomorrow I can man the desk and meet with all my friends and everyone who walks in.

I think we are ready...all the new electrical in the back seems to be working and the new desk and work wall is a dream. Russell installed more outlets and some new overhead LED lighting which is wonderful, because it is natural and doesn't change the colors of flowers or ribbons at all----YAY!

I think we are ready????

Thanks for viewing on my website, I hope to see you tomorrow!

Come pick out something for your Sweetheart tomorrow!

TONIGHT is my last night in St. Charles,
tomorrow night I sleep in my new apartment at the GrandView.
Phew, but now a long drive home and special thanks to Ian for taking all the photos my website.

(More SHOP PREVIEWS-NEXT)

The Nitty Gritty: Materials and Sources

Trish's Shop: cardboard, contact paper, scrapbook paper bricks, floor-cut scrapbook paper planks, acrylic windows with wood outside trim, doors hand made and painted, plastic interior trim, lighting a globe mini light strand,

All fixtures are made by me:
Cooler-a drawer divider with added shelves and lighting. Track is plastic channel with real sliding acrylic doors.

Cabinetry is all made from phone boxes and contact paper, and scrapbook paper accents.

Floral Arrangements
Roses and flowers: Paper Roses and tulips(Aliexpress), others are different materials, greens are cut from a variety of faux greenery from Michaels or thrift stores (I also have a huge stash of floral products)

Containers: Glass bottles from $$ store, Michaels or thrift stores, acrylic bead filler (I also use these for ice)

Vases:drawer knobs, bottle caps, glass bottles, tin, and thrifted mini's
porcelain vases circa 1950 porcelain and red pot from thrift stores.

Candles---(faux) glass, washi tapes, and matching bottle caps trays.

Printed Materials: printed from the internet, size adjusted to be 1:6.

I use hot glue at the moment and wire, floral foam with moss as a coverup to make my arrangements, because I'm in an unventilated environment. Alene's tacky glue is another possibility. All arrangements are anchored with sticky foam or tape to the shelves---for sanity sake.

Trish (Mattel Jurassic Park) and mis-matched outfit is from thrift store finds.

Its' Summer at Trish's Garden Center and Shop

Ad-Free Blog

It's a Summer morning at Trish's Garden Center and Shop...and she is busy watering the plants!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Hi, it's early morning here, and all the plants and pots need some serious watering. This Chicagoland heat wave is such a change from our cold late Spring.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

We finally got the roof frame up on the shop---though all the roofing hasn't arrived, but at least we are dry inside the shop now and open for business.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

El stopped in on her way to Vickie's for work.

El: Trish, could you pot up a rose bush like this in a white pot for my mom. This is exactly what she needs on her apartment patio and her birthday is Sunday.

Trish: Sure, how about for tomorrow, I'll call the farm and Ben can bring it in on the truck tomorrow with the weekend's supplies.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

El: Wonderful...so much to look at...

barbieoldnewgreenredo

...and you still have seeds. You have something for everyone.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: You know how eclectic the neighborhood is...I just bring in a little bit of everything and what I really like.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Zoe: Well I love all the blues...what an assortment, and that cute little gnome.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The girls continue to browse as they wait for Vickie to show up and open the door to Vickie's Vintage.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lots of supplies and cute garden accessories.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The Green house is full of heat loving plants and flowers.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: You have so many different green plants this year.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: I've always wanted a greenhouse.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: So many ideas! I love the donkey pot---!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

El: I love the natural vibe inside the store!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

El: I think you everything a city dweller would want for their home and garden.
There's Vickie, we have to go.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: Trish, is mid-July too late to book our wedding flowers?

Trish: Since your wedding is in October, that would be no problem. Just start clipping ideas from the internet and magazines, so I can get an idea of your taste, and we will start from there. How about the week of the 15th?

Carly: Great I will get Jeffrey to get an afternoon off---so we can really concentrate and I'll let you know.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

That was fun...I love when the girl's stop and chat, now to get ALL these flowers watered. It's supposed to be in the 90's again today.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Always good Planting at Trish's --
Please Come Again!

Author Note:
My own garden, yard, and Father's Day swallowed up my time last week. I hope you all had a lovely week. I'm also working on a huge project for the NBDCC (National Barbie Doll Collector's Convention) to be held right here in Chicagoland in Rosemont. The Theme is 'Decade of Destiny' which is the 1920's.

I'll be traveling back and forth for the 5 days of the convention + some volunteer time as our local doll club is host this year. I can't share much on this until after the convention. But, I'm so excited and the workroom is a certified disaster.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here's a sneak peek....

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The garden will have to wait, I'm back to my dungeon workshop, tons of paint, Modge-Podge and itsy-bits and pieces.

Do You have any HUGE projects going on?
