Vintage Finds: Part 1

After having my first covid shot, I have ventured out to some thrift stores. I found 4 stuffed goodie bags at $2.99 and $3.99 full of doll clothes. I recognized a few Barbie fabrics and other vintage 50-60's fabrics that ended up being outfits for Vogue Dolls (Ginny, Muffy outfits). Those are a post in themselves.

All were in need of cleaning, a few needed snaps, some  needed new seams, and the knits needed some stitches.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

But all were worth saving and from the late 50's and the 60's.

Big sister, Barbie, models Dancing Doll #1626 which was just in need of a good wash, (I use Oxi-Clean liquid) and hot or cool water depending on the fabric.

My Stacy (we call her Chelsea) doll models the  1965-66 Skipper Me N My Doll #1913. The only thing wrong with this dress was the shoulder straps were totally frayed. I replaced them without the tying lengths as my fingers can't do that!

The bouquets were found another time and are Barbie's from some wedding package from the 70's I think.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Stacey/Chelsea  models a very cute plaid dress that only needed one new snap and a wash.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Originally the Skipper 1966 "Rainy Day Checkers" set came with a little red vest with gold buttons, but I really like it just like this. Who knows, somewhere I may find the vest.  Originally, a paper checker set was included along with socks and red shoes.

This is a Malibu Scooter doll, she is taller than the Stacy doll. This dress did not have a label...but was larger than the other Vogue dresses. Not sure if it is Mattel or not...really fits this size doll well though. Closure is one painted metal snap. and it washed up very nice.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I love the details and trim. probably the 1960's.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

My No.3 Barbara M Roberts is wearing a sweet dress titled Brunch Time #1628, originally made in 1965.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I've matched it up with vintage orange shoes and a vintage orange bag.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This has some great details, gold buttons and rick rack under the edges.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Again this needed a snap and a wash and that's all.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

BMR models original 1965 Barbie Student Teacher without the red belt (not found).
This was very dirty and the red knit top part was in need of some stitching. The nylon insert, buttons and collar were all in great condition. I've paired it with a more contemporary briefcase, and red repro mules. she really looks ready to handle a class.

barbieoldnewgreenredo
I may have a red belt somewhere...with my Ginny dolls?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The best part of these fashions is the tailoring and the zippers!!!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Plus I have always loved red, especially on this 1960 Barbie.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I must say Christy's rubbery Malibu TNT body barely got into this cute fashion.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This is a Francie Fashion #1273 in great condition, needed one snap and has all its bits and baubles.  I've paired it with red shoes and a little vintage box purse.
The originally hat was well like a baby hat with ruffles around the edge. (I didn't get it in the goody bags, thank goodness). This felt vintage hat, works perfectly!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

You can see how snug this is over her hips and back.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

She doesn't care she loves it!

My HFIM house Barbie and Midge Repro are modeling two adorable outfits.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The HFIM Barbie (retired Model) actually had trouble getting into this one on also. The fashion is Francie #1280 "Cool White" from 1967. Very Twiggy...it had a few stitches needed, and a serious wash/soak. I was unable to get a pair of hose under this dress it was too tight --not even with thin nylon hose, lol.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I had re-bodied this Superstar TNT body of this barbie for a more modern articulated one...just a little hippier than the old one.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This is a wonderful outfit on Midge. Very popular it's Barbie Orange Blossom 1961-64, #987. The Yellow sheath underneath has lovely hip shirring and a great zipper. The bust is a little loose on Midge's repro articulated body, but the nylon white lace overdress holds it up. Excellent conditon, it just needed a good wash and one stitch in the hem of the sheath.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The original hat (not found) was yellow tulle, and these flowers are similar, but not with a white bouquet holder. I've paired it with white heels and I didn't bring out my only pair of white gloves...cause I just don't want to get them dirty and my hands have a hard time with really little stuff.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The Sinamay hat echoes the lace overskirt.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

And of course yellow earrings are push pins which comes in lots of colors. Target and Walmart have colorful pushpin sets. I also got a pastel set at TJMAX.
Enough pushpins for all the dolls now.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Babs, another Repro,...models the two-piece hostess gown, titled #1692 "Patio Party" from 1967. This is highly sought after in good condition.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Surprisingly this fabric hand washed beautifully, needed a new hook on the back and a couple of stitches on the back seam. This doll body isn't as busty as the original Barbie's. So it is quite full in front.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The jumpsuit underneath is adorable, of a lively print on nylon, so 60's.

This is really an outfit all on it's own, and I'm sure I will use it in party shots.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This also has a zipper and fits very nicely on the repro body.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Babs, definitely loves it!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I've paired it with blue mules, it originally came with blue or navy closed toed shoes.

These fashions really were a haul, and this post is just the beginning.
Stay tuned for Part 2, when I get a chance to redress and research more outfits.

WARNING! Use at your own risk.
I use Oxi-Clean, but...
Not all doll fabrics are meant to be washed. My motto is- it isn't worth anything dirty...so if it can't stand the wash then it's a 'loss', and that's that. I do light colors (without colored trim) in hot water, and reds and darks in warm to cold (they often do bleed). When you see water stained, change it and rinse between soaks.
I do not agitate the clothes I wash, but a long soak or multiple soaks and a running water rinse and squeeze.
Air dry by hanging with clothespins.
I have had no issues with light water spray to iron.

Everything you have seen here was washed with this method. I have a mini-quilters' iron that isn't particularly hot that works well for most fabrics.

Thanks for viewing and feel free to ask me any questions or inquiries, and I will get back to you.

  1. WOW!!! You struck gold with that haul. I especially love those adorable little gingham dresses at the top of this post. The plaid dresses are also quite nice and the Student Teacher ensemble is a lot of fun!!!

    1. Thanks, I was 12 in 1960 when I received my Barbie---and my parents couldn't afford to buy her clothes and me too. They were more expensive than clothes for a growing pre-teen. So, I never had any of the original outfits, so when I find one it is the mother-lode!!! Hugs, and thanks for enjoying! Sandi

  2. You get so lucky! They don't sell bags of goodies here, if lucky you'll find a doll that's dressed... My favorite is the red, white and blue Skipper dress-great for the summer holidays:@) Looking forward to seeing the rest!

    1. Bags are few and far between, I literally pounce on any I find. Sometimes they are awful...these were just some collector's who died---fix it pile. Minor things wrong and dirty...she must have never gotten around to it. Hugs, Sandi

  3. Love your #3 Barbie. She has those luscious red lips! Great finds on the fashions and they all seemed to clean up great. I'm with you---if they're dirty, they're trash. Kathy and I have removed the trim and washed things fairly successfully. On white cotton outfits, I've used Efferdent tablets with pretty good luck. I'll have to get some liquid Oxiclean which I'm sure is easier to use.

    1. I'll try and remember the oxi-clean. On the student teacher, I really soaked for a short time and really separated the red fabric from the white after blotting, because boy Mattel red bleeds for sure. Yes, removing trim...yikes...but sometimes you have to..AND FLOWRS, made that mistake once...! Live and learn OR SHARE...great tips, thanks!

  4. I love your running commentary and history of the dolls. I only had one Barbie Olympic doll growing up and always missed the Barbie experience.

I was laughing as you referred to the name changes in dolls. Even in recent years the younger dolls keep switching names and sizes. I recently came back to making crochet clothes for the dolls after a decade's absence to donate and I had to adjust to name changes and trying to figure out which dolls would/could wear which fashion doll patterns I have in my supply.

    1. Hi, Sheltie. I can only imagine having to alter crochet patterns. I did some sewing for the Jazz Baby Barbie which fit practically nothing I had and had to lengthen and alter every pattern. Such a pain. But when we share it makes life easier! Hugs, and I will have to look at your craft blog, and see how much fun you are having! Hugs, Sandi

  5. Hi, Linda! Thanks so much, it was a priceless bunch of goodies. I basically have a rule it has to be $5 or under on anything...lol. So original fashions were not in that plan. It's been fun to look everything up! Hugs, Sandi
