HFIM HOUSE history...Preparing for Thanksgiving!

When I first started the HFIM house,(Home for Impoverished Millenials) in 2017,

(Here's a little history) there were 14-16 single people sharing two large homes connected together. School debt and high living costs in Chicago caused them to form a co-op of sorts with everyone investing in two adjoining old houses and making the repairs and remodeling. In 2022 it was eventually sold. The two homes were separated and totally remodeled, the Millenial gang moved on here and there, and most made a bunch of money based on what they put in funds and time working on the repairs.

Here's the original setup---minus three rooms in the basement that were the guys quarters along with the penthouse floor left upper.

The two houses are a Mattel Townhouse 2004  and a Victorian mansion (1992)

November 11, 2025

Story for the Year--2017. 15 Millennials ages 20-27 share a huge house and yard. Elsa is an exchange teacher from Sweden with her little sister, Anna.

Dr. Ken, Barbie,(with little sister, Chelsea)  Raquel(now Richelle), and Ryan are the primary investors, the rest each put in their share of rent which covers living expenses and the repairs and everyone does clean up and assists in construction.

It is a few days before Thanksgiving and Sindy(a baker and in Culinary School) directs the kitchen.

The HFIM house was a-bustle. With lousy weather forecasted for the holiday weekend, these Chicago millennials were either working or sticking close to what was now their home in the HFIM house.

Anyway...they are ALL family ----sort of.
Only a few days away and the girl's are getting a
heads-up on the prep for Thanksgiving.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie: I'm  using  the new mixer for cornbread muffins, (Sindy gave her tips and  encouragement.)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chelsea: We have plenty of butter and fresh corn for the muffins.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chelsea: I'll cut the apples for pies.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Rory asked, "What else do you need from the fridge besides cream and eggs?"

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Sindy: "Just more butter for the extra stuffing. This is the last Turkey dish; a rolled Turkey breast with stuffing inside. We just need the veggies for the guys to roast."

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Doctor Ken: I'm getting ready to 'operate' on the grill. I'm in charge of roasting vegetables. What's that, Monnie?

Monnie: Just the vegetables and some stock for gravy. I'm suppose to chill it outside before we make the stuffing.

Doctor Ken: It's really a bit balmy, you can use the ice in cooler over there. Hard to believe it is supposed to snow this weekend.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Inside-Sindy: Thanks Monnie, I really needed the stock cool. Is Ken working on the veggies?

Monnie: He's got them on the grill right now.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Later--Sindy: "There! The last turkey is  in the oven. We will be in great shape for Thursday, since everyone has to work the day before. You can never make big dinners too far ahead."

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Raquel and Belle folded napkins for the table.
Raquel: If everyone extra comes Thursday, we will be over 22? Maybe we will have to eat in shifts.

Belle: I think the boys are working on that...a long table and adding an extension of some sort? Maybe we could use the picnic table?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Elsa: The centerpiece is lovely, Mulan. Lovely using wild things from the park and yard. In Sweden we use wheat, cranberries and apples for seasonal decorations, with many candles. At home, by today this three o'clock it is almost dark. They say, we have two seasons-Light and mostly Dark.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: We have same, in Northern China, dark long time at night. This table needs some order, I mean organizing. Maybe we should wait for the party on Thursday to know how many?  Meanwhile, where will we eat?

(NOISE from the living room---another fumble or bad call?)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Nemo:NOT FAIR! Bad call ref, bad call!

Danny: HORRIBLE CALL, it was in!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

What a crappy game....I smell food.

Ryan: The girls are cooking for Thanksgiving...all we have tonight is cold Pizza.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Anyone up for Pizza?

A blown field goal, and the BOYS all groan!

(to be continued )

The dolls shown were from my own collection or the Grand's collection as are the clothes, which are vintage, or made by myself. Occasionally, I falter and buy something new. (2017 remember).

Chris,Rob, and the Kids' Winter plans

Chris: I almost have all the decorations down. I suppose this one tree won't matter if we make sure the lights are off.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I really like this tree...here...should I leave it up all YEAR long?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Skipper: I don't think so Mom. It would look icky with Easter Bunnies on it.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Grumpy: I just want them to leave so I can demolish that cake thing on the table.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Scooter: Shamrocks wouldn 't look so bad. Will the kitties be okay when we are gone?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Puss: Hoomans gone....what?????

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Rob: They'll be fine. Auntie Barbie is right next door and they will love having the whole place to themselves. Is everyone packed?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

We need to leave for the airport by 9:00 PM for the red-eye to LA.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

(The stockings are gone---but the fire is cozy.)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The girls in unison: We're packed and everything is a go-!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Scooter: I brought two swimsuits will it be warm in California?

Rob: Grandma and Garmpa have a heated pool, so yes...it will be warm enough.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

(Decorations still Up, but wash is done)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chris: I'm packed, I'm hoping to buy some new clothes in LA. People dress so dreary here.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Rob: Your closet is always full...!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chris: We've been here almost six years, and I haven't adjusted yet...can't wait for sun!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Rob: How about one more Christmas photo here:

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Skipper: But, what about the kitties????

barbieoldnewgreenredo

It's really hard to get them to all be still.

Waiting on Trish and Victorian Mansion Finished!

Ad-Free Blog

Almost ready for showing!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

It's Friday and Richelle and Vanessa are waiting for Trish to appear with all the plantings for the Townhouse and the Victorian Mansion.

Richelle: This is Trish right now, she' stuck in snow and traffic accident on North Avenue. ETA unknown. Well, I guess we will just have to wait and go over our lists.

Vanessa: Well, I still have to fill the woodbox and the fireplace. I can't believe how wonderful this house is now.

barbieoldnewgreenredo
barbieoldnewgreenredo

...My mom would kill for this kitchen...

barbieoldnewgreenredo

...I really like that work table-desk in a kitchen. Great place to do homework, too. We all have to work at the kitchen table at home.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

That's a huge refrigerator. I'm going to go upstairs and double check my list.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Vanessa: This room is so old-fashioned, but with a deliciously comfy look. Okay in here, I have to pull out the drawer???

barbieoldnewgreenredo

...Nothing in these drawers??

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Hmmmmm?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

No drawers here, I'll leave one door open though.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

HERE it IS! Well this gives this room lots of storage...Check---open drawer!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Now this room, not very big, but room for everything.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Closet is super functional, and...there is even a desk/table in the turret! Checking the lights---functional and ready!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This bathroom is to die for. List says check the sink/medicine cabinet.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Everything is shining, and in its place.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Cabinet doors open or closed, love the mirrors inside...

barbieoldnewgreenredo

and out...cute little chandelier up there. This room is ready---CHECK!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

List says...check wash...okay! Empty dryer and empty washer. I'll have to check the dryer later again.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Downstairs, now for the wood box. I think I will move that heavy box to the floor when I fill it.

Richelle: Vanessa, Trish is next door, and her brother is going to unload plants here, will you go and help her?

Vanessa: Sure!
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: There that's all that goes in here! Just a little 'LIVE' in every room. Good Feng shui.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Vanessa: Ooookay...where does this go?

Trish: Just take it into the bathroom, please.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Vanessa: Sure! It's either me through this door or this pot! Wow, Trish that arrangement by the tub is gorgeous. Is it really live?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Yes, all the plants are real (in the doll world). The twigs are forced and will probably drop blossoms, but grow in the pots.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

(Trish completes her magic and the bathroom is done!)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

(Vanessa takes one more pot upstairs to the bedroom and turns off the lights, meanwhile Trish is fussing on the main floor!)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Does this need to be bigger?  There is so much going on here...probably not?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Last pot...there, that fits perfectly---a little of the outside in.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

...Only two more pieces to bring in tomorrow that wouldn't fit in the truck! This room is perfect, Richelle is amazing!

barbieoldnewgreenredo
(Back at the Victorian Mansion)

Trish: Here's the bushes you ordered, where should I put them?

Richelle: One on either backend of the house to define the property here, I have to slide these glass doors shut! It's freezing!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Brrr-rrr, temp really dropped. I suppose I will slide all the way home.  How are these herbs, Richelle?

Richelle: Looks great and I can smell that Rosemary from here. I'm putting the last two by the window seat in the living room.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Upstairs a small planter in the one bedroom,

barbieoldnewgreenredo

....some succulents at the laundry center...

barbieoldnewgreenredo

...and gorgeous, romantic roses for the bedroom! DONE! Lights out!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: Oh, goodness, I forgot about Woofie!

Vanessa: I locked up the townhouse and all the lights are off. What next?

Richelle: Nothing until tomorrow,  my notes from Lara said you will be at the townhouse, and Ms.Roberts and I will be here or was it the other way around?  So, Open House ready by 1pm, so how about 11am, here. We have to hang banners and signs out tomorrow!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Vanessa: Hopefully there won't be anymore snow, the houses look gorgeous! I'm so excited, my first OPEN HOUSE___HOUSES!!! Goodnight!
