HFIM HOUSE history...Preparing for Thanksgiving!

When I first started the HFIM house,(Home for Impoverished Millenials) in 2017,

(Here's a little history) there were 14-16 single people sharing two large homes connected together. School debt and high living costs in Chicago caused them to form a co-op of sorts with everyone investing in two adjoining old houses and making the repairs and remodeling. In 2022 it was eventually sold. The two homes were separated and totally remodeled, the Millenial gang moved on here and there, and most made a bunch of money based on what they put in funds and time working on the repairs.

Here's the original setup---minus three rooms in the basement that were the guys quarters along with the penthouse floor left upper.

The two houses are a Mattel Townhouse 2004  and a Victorian mansion (1992)

November 11, 2025

Story for the Year--2017. 15 Millennials ages 20-27 share a huge house and yard. Elsa is an exchange teacher from Sweden with her little sister, Anna.

Dr. Ken, Barbie,(with little sister, Chelsea)  Raquel(now Richelle), and Ryan are the primary investors, the rest each put in their share of rent which covers living expenses and the repairs and everyone does clean up and assists in construction.

It is a few days before Thanksgiving and Sindy(a baker and in Culinary School) directs the kitchen.

The HFIM house was a-bustle. With lousy weather forecasted for the holiday weekend, these Chicago millennials were either working or sticking close to what was now their home in the HFIM house.

Anyway...they are ALL family ----sort of.
Only a few days away and the girl's are getting a
heads-up on the prep for Thanksgiving.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Barbie: I'm  using  the new mixer for cornbread muffins, (Sindy gave her tips and  encouragement.)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chelsea: We have plenty of butter and fresh corn for the muffins.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Chelsea: I'll cut the apples for pies.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Rory asked, "What else do you need from the fridge besides cream and eggs?"

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Sindy: "Just more butter for the extra stuffing. This is the last Turkey dish; a rolled Turkey breast with stuffing inside. We just need the veggies for the guys to roast."

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Doctor Ken: I'm getting ready to 'operate' on the grill. I'm in charge of roasting vegetables. What's that, Monnie?

Monnie: Just the vegetables and some stock for gravy. I'm suppose to chill it outside before we make the stuffing.

Doctor Ken: It's really a bit balmy, you can use the ice in cooler over there. Hard to believe it is supposed to snow this weekend.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Inside-Sindy: Thanks Monnie, I really needed the stock cool. Is Ken working on the veggies?

Monnie: He's got them on the grill right now.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Later--Sindy: "There! The last turkey is  in the oven. We will be in great shape for Thursday, since everyone has to work the day before. You can never make big dinners too far ahead."

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Raquel and Belle folded napkins for the table.
Raquel: If everyone extra comes Thursday, we will be over 22? Maybe we will have to eat in shifts.

Belle: I think the boys are working on that...a long table and adding an extension of some sort? Maybe we could use the picnic table?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Elsa: The centerpiece is lovely, Mulan. Lovely using wild things from the park and yard. In Sweden we use wheat, cranberries and apples for seasonal decorations, with many candles. At home, by today this three o'clock it is almost dark. They say, we have two seasons-Light and mostly Dark.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: We have same, in Northern China, dark long time at night. This table needs some order, I mean organizing. Maybe we should wait for the party on Thursday to know how many?  Meanwhile, where will we eat?

(NOISE from the living room---another fumble or bad call?)

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Nemo:NOT FAIR! Bad call ref, bad call!

Danny: HORRIBLE CALL, it was in!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

What a crappy game....I smell food.

Ryan: The girls are cooking for Thanksgiving...all we have tonight is cold Pizza.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Anyone up for Pizza?

A blown field goal, and the BOYS all groan!

(to be continued )

The dolls shown were from my own collection or the Grand's collection as are the clothes, which are vintage, or made by myself. Occasionally, I falter and buy something new. (2017 remember).

What's New for the New Year 2024 with Ryan and Richelle.

Ad-Free Blog

We are at Ryan and Richelle's new digs, and they have an interesting discussion with Midge and Alan.

Midge: Wow, I sure love all the space you have here. How did you ever find this place?
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Ryan: It was my cousins, and he sold it to me to avoid re-doing stuff and to save on the realtor fees. It was a family exchange sort of. We Saved a lot of money, and it's still in the neighborhood we are familiar with. It really is big for us right now. Actually that is why we asked you here.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Alan: Yes, we have been looking for something affordable for quite awhile. What do you have in mind?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: Well, we thought you might want to rent part of the house and share this floor with us.
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Midge: I've been living out of a suitcase at my aunts, and Alan's lease is up in the New Year and it's increased with extra HOA fees and astronomical if he stays.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Ryan: Well, if you might be interested, we can take a quick tour! Let's start upstairs.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: We haven't done a thing in the house yet, my taste isn't pink, but we may have to just deal with it, here in our bedroom.  I want to make a work station up here, and change the dresser out for a real closet.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

We do have Ryan's mom's pooch. Mortimer is really old, and sleeps a lot. He only appears at meal time, so be forewarned.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: The upstairs bathroom is huge. You would be able to use the tub, but there is a full size bathroom with shower downstairs level.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: The main floor has this living/dining room and table for four for meals.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

I'm moving this to create a work space upstairs, mostly because the light isn't great and it would be in the line of traffic.
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: The kitchen is really quite complete.

Midge: Great appliances and I love all the shelves.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: The fridge is huge, and there is plenty of storage. We could figure out some sort of system for cooking. Carry-out is so expensive now, and of course we are trying to cut expenses since we have this house.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

This is the current island, which I may move to the center for traffic flow. We will see how it works.

Midge: The stairway goes down to the rooms we would have?

Ryan: Yes, and the garage is down on this level.
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Richelle: Here's the garage.
barbieoldnewgreenredo

Ryan: Yep...and we have it already full of 'stuff'. Let's check out the main room.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The basement was basically a man-cave. We brought our bed from the HFIM house...and it has great storage drawers underneath. There is plenty of room under the stairway for a closet. The wall bookcase is really anchored so it have to work around it. I had a desk under there, but the bed had to go somewhere.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Ryan: Here's a couple of old snapshots from before we bought the house.

barbieolldnewgreenredo

It's really a flexible space!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Here's the space for storage under the stairs.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

But, there's this great closet by the bathroom.

Midge: Anything is better than living out of a suitcase.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Ryan: The bathroom is great and the shower is the best, that's one thing we are going to add upstairs.

Alan: Looks great and plenty of light down here too.

Richelle: I think it might be a good idea for you both. So what do you two think? Would you like to make this a duplex for awhile, and as long as you want?

Alan: I sure do, Midge what do you think?

Midge: As long as I can take a bath once in awhile, even though showers are fine. And, I love to cook, so I'd be happy to take that on.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The DIY dollhouse circa 2015

Ryan: Let's work out a simple contract and you can both move in, whenever!

SO
Welcome HOME to Ryan, Richelle, Midge and Alan's place.

 Wonder what they will do
in the New Year?

Ad-Free Blog
The girls have moved a few things around in the the townhouse they share. (this is really two townhouses combined see this post HERE.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan is madly working on the last of her doctoral thesis!

Carly: It's too bad it's so cold outside (40 degrees) that we couldn't get the windows and the gardening done with everyone home today!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: There I have sent it off, my thesis is done. All that is left now is graduation in May!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Teresa: (reporter for Channel 7 news) That's great news, Mulan. Congratulations, do we call you doctor now?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: Of course not, and thank you.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: That's great Mulan, now you can come to my Zoomba classes.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Zoe: I finally graduate in May, too. It's been a long haul going to school half-time and working full time at Vickie's. But I'm looking for a teaching position for Fall.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: That will be wonderful, Zoe. I'm sure you will find one.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: My dance classes have filled up nicely. Jeffrey and I haven't set a date, but I'll be moving out in Fall. There will be so many changes!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Zoe: I can't believe that Barbie and Ken bought the remodeled townhouse. Everything is different now.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Carly: Yes and Chris and Robb have the remodeled Mansion. Well we can still have barbecues with them.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mulan: Well, here's to changes---does anyone want more wine?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: Of course, and then maybe we ALL can have a quick run in the park!?!

Collective: Nooooooooo, uh-uh!, Not me, ugh!, Brrrrr!

SPRING is DELAYED in CHICAGOLAND

the Roofers start tomorrow pulling off the roof for the new one!
