Structures: Grand Hotel, an Overview for all ages.

 Ad-Free Blog

I'm very anxious to get this project up again...it was hastily taken down when we had a flood. Basically the entire doll room was packed up in less than 2 hours, I had 5 helpers...and well...life, the dollroom got really scrambled.

I'm doing an overview to show you the project's inception and some finished bits, before I unpack the "Grand Hotel" which I renamed the GrandView.

This takes up so much space, an entire 6 foot table with the bakery kitchen extension that no one has even seen yet, just some posts on working on it.

The Grand Hotel I found for $10 was faded in poor condition with dead electrical, doors missing, no accessories, but the elevator worked.

Wood laid out to increase the height of the first floor. Blue tape is where the new wall will be constructed. Pillars are Cake pillars which will support the new second floor.

I wanted to make a couple of condo's upstairs and two shops and a small office downstairs, also a lobby area across from the doors.

Since all Mattel structures are stingy on space, I started to plan a deeper building. Here you see the structure opened flat out with some of the existing floors removed. I built new floors to make the floor 22" deep instead of the barely 12" it was.

I added a wood 2"x4" wood foundation made to look like concrete to raise the main floor and increase the height to the ceiling. The new outside walls were to be created by foam core. the entire piece rests on a plywood base.

To keep the construction process entertaining I had Lara as overseer of the project and Russell the contractor participating in the design and problems.

I even had guys working on the building...that post is actually FUN!

I even did posts of the dolls...on and off the job. LOL.

Adding that 'footing' of wood  made all difference in the height.

There was tons of measuring and lots of trial and error...here the floor is laid out before gluing to the new plywood floor. The wood 2x4's are trimmed and painted to look like concrete.

The  small white blocks are for the pillar bases to make pillars line up  to evenly support the second floor.

This shows you what had to be added to create the  lobby of the building. The blue tape defines the open atrium area on the second floor.

Of course I made poster board patterns...the elevator had to be left open to function. The right side would become a 'studio' condo.

Russell and Lara checking out the new floor. Note how the elevator levels to the new floor---WIN!

Which ended up looking like this when 'tiled' to match the downstairs.

The atrium was filled with plants windows and railings on the second floor.

The condos were restored with cobbled parts from thrift store Barbie structures and windows.

Side and back walls were foam core and secured with velcro as well as the pillars. This is still early in the construction...the hole in the wall is for a built-in cooler for the bakery.

my tile...I tweaked until I got just the shades of color I wanted.

Bakery window and outside eating area.

Old Mattel counter redone....and lit with battery lights. The upper shelves are a makeup organizer from a thrift store.

A two story stained glass window was 'uncovered' in the demolition..a supposed restyle that was covered it up in the 1920's.  The 'window' was printed on pieces of vellum and mounted on plexiglass which filled the back atrium hole with a planter and an added settee.

The atrium becomes a meeting place to share a cup of coffee and some delicious bakery from Sindy's Patisserie.

The Grand Hotel restoration into the GrandView. BMR Ltd. decided on a refined palette of colors... lengthy posts on painting are available at the end of this post.

Salon Jacquie before finishing the remodel. All fixtures were from thrift store finds and redone.

Nail station...repainted from YUCKY Barbie pink.

Remodel of chairs was simply a repaint of acrylic mixed with lots of medium to 'stain' the fabric.
Sadly the opening of the GrandView coincided with the shut down of the US from Covid and all the ramifications of no business operations in Chicago at that time.
Since I have many young viewers...I did stories with dolls masked...trying to solve their life's problems.

If you are interested in the actual DIY construction and the planning process...simply search  Hotel or follow these links.

These are all mostly construction information posts, there are lots of story posts of the residents, events, holidays...so enjoy my Doll world surrounding
the Grand Hotel...renamed the GrandView.

As, you can see...I can't wait to put it up again!

Patisserie is STILL OPEN!

Ad-Free Blog
Tuesday 7:40 am at Sindy's Patisserie

Sindy: I can't believe we have been open for almost two weeks. Thanks for coming in and helping with the orders, Barbie.

Barbie: No problem, glad to get out of the house and help somewhere. Besides, Chelsea and the guys were driving me crazy.

Sindy: I never thought we would have to turn off the phone, but that has helped, too. All of today's orders are ready. Stacking up the last one. If anyone wants to order, it has to be for tomorrow, or we won't have anything left for the walk-in customers. And, no whipcream cakes, because of supply issues.

Barbie: I totally agree, you are pretty sparse already. Did you give up on cakes?

Sindy: Yes, now it's cupcakes and sheet cake pieces. We can serve the most people, and it's easiest right now and the wisest use of the ovens. We can't keep up with the breads. Poor Jamie, he was still here when I came in this morning!

Barbie: Jamie's so quiet. It's good thing Rory is coming home. She's been staying with her aunt outside of Oklahoma City since her tour got cancelled. It will be great to have a full time kitchen authority in charge again. Thank goodness, a few left and we can keep a safe distance at home.

Sindy: I'm sorry I wasn't able to pitch in more...but this last two weeks have been crazy, here. Everyone was right, this neighborhood needed a bakery.

Barbie: Sit down for a break, we open the doors in fifteen, and you can start baking then.

Barbie: The system Lara set up for online ordering is great, she even has limits on what you can make according to your supplies. That's impressive.

Sindy: Yes, she's a whiz with computers. All I have to do is enter, what we have delivered for supplies, put in the orders and recipes for the day, and it takes care of the rest. We are all set---and so far we have been making all our commitments. I just wish customers weren't so grumpy.

Sindy: Phew, this feels good. I know I need to get some yeast doughs mixed up. I hope the next supply truck shows up with more bags and supplies. I never know what they are going to deliver for sure. I'll give you the invoices if they do. Maybe you can enter them, if we have a slow time. But, I see customers are lining up outside already.

Barbie: Well, the rack is full of cupcakes, I hope they last...and you still have donuts left after filling the orders.

Sindy: Oh, make sure the Chicago Police Department and the Fire Department, don't pay for their orders. They are working hard enough, already!

Now, I better start more donuts and cupcakes right away. Break is over!

Doors are OPEN!

Barbie: Hi! Welcome to the Patisserie, how can we help you?
Sorry, we don't have drinks available right now, but we have lots of fresh bakery.

Thank-you and please come again, or order online, for pickup the next day. Stay Safe!

Back at the HFIM house, it's now 1 pm....Jamie and Patrick are up in the empty bunk room.

Patrick:(right) Hey, Jamie....time to make the donuts....HEY JAMIE___up and at Em!

Jamie:....errrr, what day is it?

Patrick: Tuesday---all day...you need a shower! You smell like--strawberries. And, don't get too close! I kinda like having this floor to myself, when you are gone. Can you bring home something from the bakery, though? Whatever is still laying around.

Jamie: Sure, but we have been sold out of everything, everyday. I don't think we will have anything. Call in an order, and I will bring it home, tonight, tomorrow, whenever I get back.

Patrick: Thanks, Jam.... If you need help down there, let me know, I'm going crazy with the bar closed. I'm just glad, I haven't signed the lease yet for the Hotel basement.

Jamie: Sindy...do I really smell like strawberries?
Sindy: Everything smells like strawberries in here!

Sindy's Patiserrie OPENS

Ad-Free Blog

Sindy and Jamie worked very hard to open the Bakery and Coffee Shop.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

They cleaned and stocked, baked and cleaned again.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lists were made and items crossed off.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Cooler is done....! All stocked and ready to go.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Late into the night---finally everything was ready...except

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Governor Pritzker, wisely declared all restaurants and bars closed.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

The Patisserie and Coffee Shop would not open as planned

On to Plan B.... After careful consideration, and some strategic rearranging, Sindy and Jamie decided to open for Bakery only. Blocking off the original entrance, removing the banquette...
they set up to serve the public two at a time.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Taking extra precautionary measures for safety---Sindy will arrive at 4 am, and will wait on the Bakery customers from 8-2pm, while Jamie bakes in the afternoon until night.
They are hoping not serving coffees/teas, will allow them to keep the payroll low enough to get them through this tough time.

Sindy: Do we really have everything ready? What if no one comes to our Open signs?
Jamie: Are you kidding? It's at least a fifteen block walk to the nearest grocery store to get bread. I bet by the end of the week we will be selling out every day.

OUTSIDE, lines of shoppers are beginning to form, people are keeping a safe distance apart while they wait for 8am.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Justin is second in line...and patiently waiting.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: Hi, I'm Gilly---I have/had the ZoomBa studio down the street. Aren't you the new Salon's owner?
Jacquie: Sure am, or will be, whenever the virus is over. We were totally ready for the Grand Opening, and then we were closed down.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: I'm just here to water the plants, I didn't know I would have to wait in line to do this. How are you, Zoe? I saw Vickie's was closed down, too!

Zoe: Vickie is manning the website though. Yes, and the pre-school is still open. People need childcare, but I'm only working there only 3 days a week. It's going to be hard to pay the bills.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

It looks like the doors are opening.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Mr. Pitt is the first customer...he stares at the price sheet.

Russ Pitt: I need 2 croissants, 2 brioche...and let me try some of that Danish Raspberry Kringle.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Sindy: The Kringle is on me, Mr. Pitt. Those shelves you put up in the kitchen are perfect, thanks so much!

Russ Pitt: You're welcome, Sindy. I'm just glad you were finally able to open. No coffee? Sigh, though, and I guess I understand.

Sindy: Maybe we will have carry-out hot beverages next week. I couldn't get my hands on adequate paper supplies, and single serving extras on such short notice. My extra help backed out, her parent's won't let her work during the closures.

Russ: Well good luck, I need to get this home. Strange to be going home in the middle of the morning. Bye!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Sindy: Did you need a name on the cake?
Justin: No, it's for Dad's birthday...he'll know it's his. How much is that?

Sindy: That will be $19.75 with tax. Let me close that box up tight for you.

Justin: Thanks, it sure looks good!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: (Waves at Lara working in her office, through the window).

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Alana: Those brownies look delicious, and the Kringle stick, too. But, I really need some Honey Wheat Bread, please. It's great you are open in this neighborhood. I love your selections..everything looks great.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: I need some French Bread, two brioches, two of those huge donuts, and some Kringle slices for me...! But, I'm shopping for my Mom and Dad. She's not supposed to go out.

Sindy: Well, I hope your parents will be okay, everyone is worried and we opened to serve this neighborhood.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Gilly: I'm so glad you are open, it's a two bus trip to the Jewel. This is much nicer. Thanks!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Jacquie: Hi Trish, the plants look wonderful!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Trish: Thanks, Jacquie, your shop is so cool. I'm so sorry you aren't able to open yet.

Jacquie: It's okay, we would rather be safe. I'm here to pick up my mail, I just worry about my girls, they won't qualify for unemployment since we never opened. I would hate to lose them.

Trish: Hopefully this won't last long.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lara; Hi, Jamie, I heard the phone ringing off the hook from my desk.

Jamie: Yea, I can't get a thing done, and Sindy can't be running back and forth either. Could you maybe 'man' or 'woman' the phone for us, for awhile?

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lara: Sure this will be just what I need to keep busy.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lara: Wow, look at all the orders you have and it's only 10:30 in the morning. Let's see how this is going to work.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Later that afternoon...

Jacquie: Hi, Lara. I see they have you working here now.

Sindy: She's been kind enough to answer some phones. The orders keep pouring in.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Jacquie: I know all kinds of businesses are doing pick-up or delivery. Too bad we can't do hair and send it home in a box...LOL. I just made it back here by 2pm. I had to come back and get the cake pops for my kids. Thanks, I hope it keeps being busy for you.
Can I put out some flyers somewhere for the Salon?

Sindy: Of course...we have to help each other.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Jamie: Sindy it is time for you to go...can you turn out the lights?

Sindy: Sure, Jamie. But, I can stay for awhile.

Jamie: No, you go home. Lara really helped. We are going to need someone to pack orders and answer the phone, tomorrow. Any ideas?

Sindy: I'll see if I can get someone from the house! Oh, I have to cook tonight. Yikes.

Jamie: There's a big tub of turkey chili in the freezer, just thaw it out and make a bunch of noodles and salad...easy-peasy. I planned meals ahead, cause I knew we would be wiped out. Only problem is all the guys are home, too. Might want to have some pizzas ready.

Sindy: You think of everything...thanks Jamie, you're really a Peachy Pecan Pie! And, we sold three of those today!!!

Outside the girls gab a bit a fair distance away.

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Lara: Take care Jacquie, hope you can keep busy!

Jacquie: I got four kids at home right now with schools closed, I need time off from them! (chuckle)

Sindy: Sorry ladies, I have to get home and thaw out supper...See ya!

barbieoldnewgreenredo

Sindy: Thanks for helping out, Lara. Two customers at a time aren't too bad, but that phone, never stopped ringing. How many orders were there?

Lara: I didn't count, but I got to the fifth page. Some orders are for the weekend. I'll be around tomorrow if you get desperate. We have two condos being moved into. I need to be here for the movers and the doors. More full condos, means more business for you!

Sindy: Thanks, wow-that's great! The biggest problem is guessing what customers are going to want and need. Laters, Lara. It looks like it is going to rain again...Bye!
